With INP as a Young Professional to Canada

A travelogue by Christian Tuttor

Day 1: First contact with INP
Time period: About five months ago, early January 2017
After finishing my power engineering/technology studies in Schweinfurt, I was looking for new challenges. Through my internet research, I became aware of INP. I discovered an offer from INP for the assembly and maintenance of GIS systems. In addition to the professional skills, a high availability for travel was required. Unfortunately, nothing came of it. At the end of November, however, I got a call from Mr. Knaus. He told me about a project in Canada, where an HVDC Transmission system (high-voltage direct current transmission) was to be developed. My task was supposed to be the assembly and commissioning of the transformers. Finally, the jobs search had come to an end. On January 2, 2017, I started my job at a Transformer Station in Nuremberg. I was introduced to transformers and got to know about the project. My trip to Canada was scheduled for early April. First, I was supposed to work two weeks on the southern station (Riel Converter Station RCS) in Winnipeg. After that, I would then continue to travel to the northern station (Keewatinohk Converter Station KCS). It is located "near" Gillam, about 100 km (62 miles) away.

Day 2: Traveling to Canada with INP
The visa was a definite challenge. I could not obtain an "inter-company transfer" visa, as this would have required a business affiliation of at least one year. Our only option was an application for the "Young Professionals Program". However, that was easier said than done, since no one at INP had yet had any experience with this application. However, with the combined forces of INP Canada, INP USA, and INP Germany, this obstacle could be overcome.
