INP Egypt LLC, represented by Managing Director Alaa Kamal, who is also a board member of the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce AHK in Cairo, was awarded the contract to host one of the few and highly sought-after side events during the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in the form of a high-level panel discussion. This will take place on Nov. 15, 2022, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the conference site. Participants in the panel discussion will include INP experts as well as representatives from the IHI Group, Steinmüller Engineering and other well-known companies in the international energy industry.
"Shaping the world through sustainable solutions: Utilizing the Overcapacity of Renewable Electric Power Available in Egypt" is the title of the event.
Egypt is currently developing a special industrial area of over 500 square kilometers on the Suez Canal with great financial incentives for investors. Here, green energy is to be produced and its excess capacity in the form of hydrogen, ammonia, fertilizer for domestic use but mainly for export. For this purpose, investors as well as buyers of the green products are currently being sought.
Based on this program tailored to Egypt, the various possibilities for the use of regenerative overcapacities will be discussed.
Throughout the conference, INP Egypt LLC will also be present with a booth together with the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce AHK. The INP Group with more than 30 years of expertise in engineering services in power generation, power transmission and power distribution with more than 500 experts working worldwide. On site, in addition to INP Egypt employees, Katharina Jester-Sartingen, INP company founder, Georg Jester, one of the two Managing Partners of the INP Group, Prof. Dr. Nicole Graf, Chairwoman of the Advisory Board, and other experts from the individual INP companies will be available to UN Climate Conference participants for questions and discussions.
The UN Climate Change Conference is an annual meeting of the UN Parties on the subject of climate change. The aim of the conference in recent years has been to find a so-called post-Kyoto regime, a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expired in 2012. This hitherto unique binding instrument under international law on climate protection sets out commitments by countries on their greenhouse gas emissions. A successor agreement was reached at the 2016 conference in Paris; this meeting in Paris was therefore an important step forward in the fight against climate change.
Binding climate protection targets were agreed for all 195 countries that are members of the UN Climate Change Conference. Among other things, it was stipulated that global warming should be limited to less than 2 degrees Celsius. This requires net global greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced to zero in the second half of the century. In order to achieve this, the countries also agreed on financial aid to benefit developing countries.
When it comes to interests in favor of climate protection, the economies of the member states also always play a role. The U.S. government, for example, wants the U.S. economy to be greenhouse gas neutral by 2050. In general, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 80% by 2050; renewable energies are to be strengthened. Germany is also working on a "Climate Protection Plan 2050".
The focus of Egypt's climate strategy is on adaptation to climate change. In view of the historically cold winter and unusually hot summer months, the consequences of climate change are noticeable to everyone in Egypt. This also applies to phenomena such as heavy rainfall, which is becoming more frequent. Less visible is the declining inflow of Nile water as a result of heat and drought in the countries of origin up the Nile. Soil salinization and coastal erosion are other threats. Adaptation is therefore a top priority in Egypt.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Egypt relies largely on renewable energy, and to a lesser extent on nuclear power. The Egyptian government plans to introduce a CO2 exchange. This means that carbon dioxide emissions in the country would be priced for the first time.
INP Egypt LLC, with the expertise of the entire INP Group, is supporting Egypt's flagship project to utilize excess capacity and reduce CO2 emissions, together with other well-known companies in the energy industry.
